Epoxies for Polyphenylene Substrates

Polyphenylene oxide (PPO) plastics offer high temperature resistance, superior dimensional stability, impact strength and good flame retardancy. This plastic has low moisture absorption, excellent electrical insulation properties and withstands exposure to acids, bases and cleaning agents. It also features light weight, stiffness, creep resistance and outstanding tensile strength. Noryl* is a homogeneous blend of polyphenylene oxide (PPO) and polystyrene (PS) which was developed to increase a glass transition temperature of pure PPO.

PPO is used in a wide variety of applications. Some examples are:

  • Water pump components
  • Washing machine parts
  • Sterilizable medical instruments
  • Drink vending machines
  • Vaporizer and scrubber parts
  • Video display terminals
  • Automotive coil forms
  • Business machine housings

Considerations for Bonding Polyphenylene Oxide

Main products for bonding polyphenylene oxide are EP62-1Med, EP21BAS and EP21TP-2. USP Class VI approved EP62-1Med has a Tg>170°C and superior chemical resistance properties. It possesses rapid cure speeds at moderate temperatures. Radiopaque epoxy system EP21BAS has a convenient one to one mix ratio. This smooth flowable paste provides superior durability and is an excellent electrical insulator. Master Bond epoxy polysulfide EP21TP-2 offers outstanding toughness and can withstand rigorous thermal cycling. It is often employed in applications exposed to fuels, oils and lubricants.
